Meet the Author: Kelsey Takahashi

Hello, and thanks for stopping by! My name is Kelsey Takahashi. I am a teacher and newly published author of But I Don't Look Like You. Being an adopted child myself, I write to promote open conversation between adopted children and their families. All adoptive families are different. Mine, for example, is an open adoption. This means that I have always had contact with some of my biological family since birth. My parents (the couple who adopted me) always kept pictures of my birth parents around the house, and normalized the discussion about my adoption. Still, I had questions, curiosities, and fears that I would hurt my parent's feelings for wanting to know more about my biological background. Eventually, I came forward to my parents about my anxieties. They were surprised to find that I was feeling guilty about wanting to learn more about my biological family, and assured me that any questions and discussions are welcome. If I would have come forward sooner, I could have spared years of experiencing negativity for wanting to know more about myself. Therefore, I felt inspired to write books about adoption to serve as tools for conversation and to bring comfort to those in unique situations like my own. In the future, I hope to add to my collection of adoption books to inspire others to always consider the option of adoption.
